As a child Anastasia Dragunova, dreamt of being in Starfleet, but unlike a lot of children, who shared this dream, she had no intention of becoming starship captain. She wanted to defend the Federation with her hands and her wits, to meet her enemies face to face.
An accident just after her 15th birthday, almost cost her dream and her life. She was travelling with her father on a diplomatic mission when their shuttle was attacked. Her father and the pilot were killed and she was seriously injured in the resulting crash. She owes her life to the other survivor, one Petty Officer Kelly Winston of Diplomatic Security, who protected her from the Breen attackers until local SerNumi colonists arrived and despatched the Breen.
Treatment for her injuries required multiple skin grafts and the replacement of her right arm with a bio-implant as well as some extensive counselling and rehab.
Not ready to give up on her dream, she worked hard and at 18 she applied to Starfleet Academy and was accepted.
