Kay Strant only smiles when he thinks he’s got one over on you. His easy annoyance with others he keeps in check, but he’s sharp with most people for a reason.

Born on Celmar III in what is now the Cardassian Demilitarised Zone, Kay was the first son of Simon and Deirdre Strant. They left shortly after hostilities between the Cardassians and the Federation escalated, moving to Betazed for a time, then on to Starbase 22 near the Romulan Neutral Zone. His father was a merchant, a man who ran what was at times a moderately successful business in small starships and shuttlecraft. His mother, descended from a long line of engineers, was the chief technician for their little family business, fixing up old ships to get a better deal for the clients they represented. Occasionally, they came into commercial conflict with a small consortium of Ferengi traders, but it was not until 2369, just after Kay had enlisted with Starfleet, that his family truly ran afoul of them. His mother died in mysterious circumstances, yet both the authorities and Simon believed the accident to be a murder perpetrated by a Ferengi named Krel. It was a warning to Simon. There was not enough evidence to prove this, however, and although Kay knew his father played no part in his mother’s death, he blamed Simon and his increasingly suspicious dealings for what happened.
