The USS Majestic is moderately armed, diplomatic Starfleet vessel developed at the Utopia Planetia Shipyards in response to a need to replace the aging Norway and Ambassador class vessels in an effort to better serve Starfleet’s Diplomatic Corps. The project was officially begun in 2372 by Starfleet’s Advanced Starship Design Bureau (ASDB) following the initiation of the Dominion War. In the final months of the Dominion War, Starfleet required many of their starships to entertain diplomatic missions in an attempt to secure additional allies against the Dominion. These missions were often hindered by the limitations of aged starships like the Norway and Ambassador class. New innovations stemming from the Sovereign class allowed for rapid design, systems integrations and vehicle construction. The final dimensions of the new ship became 357 meters by 171 meters by 60 meters and fifteen decks.
The Majestic class project, overseen by Rear Admiral Boris Pakarilov of the ASDB, began with the modification and development of existing spacecraft designs, the Sovereign and Intrepid classes, that had been proven time and again. No space frame had yet been constructed, and the compacted hull shape was undergoing warp field interaction simulations. The study vehicle, designated NXP-3215WP/T, was being considered as a long-range diplomatic courier. This program was also responsible for the successful introduction of the Anubis class destroyer, seen as a ’heavy’ counterpart to the Majestic – favoring patrol and defense over exploration and diplomatic duties.
The Majestic class Engineering Corps was made up of approximately a quarter of the engineers who had served on the Intrepid class design team. As such, many design elements in the Majestic can be traced to the Intrepid class. Many of these elements were taken completely from the Intrepid and placed into the Majestic; such as the bridge, sickbay, and other internal fittings. The saucer also houses a scaled-down version of the same sensor suite found on the Intrepid class. The Intrepid’s influence helped to speed the development of the ship. However, the majority of the work was devoted to designing a completely new Engineering hull and nacelles. Aesthetically similar to the nacelles of the Sovereign and Prometheus designs, the warp components of the Majestic are all original. Designed to be quickly mass-produced and simple, the design eliminates the complex variable-geometry nacelle configuration of the Intrepid in favor of a fixed nacelle strut.
When the Dominion War drove the redesign of the pathfinder vehicle, it was decided to compact the vessel, making final dimensions 260 meters by 100 meters by 50 meters and decreasing the ship to ten decks. It was also deemed necessary to surround the hull with multilayer ablative armor, proven a workable defense with the introduction of the Defiant class. In its initial diplomacy role, the Majestic class would have produced as many as twelve copies. The USS Majestic was introduced in 2376 with four other Majestic class vessels under construction. Complete production of the initial twelve vessels was completed in 2379.
The weapons payload of the Majestic is a step up from the Norway, with Type IX Arrays and four burst-fire torpedo launchers. These armaments were balanced to allow the ship to better perform its role as a patrol vessel, while not encumbering its sensors, engines, and communications subsystems.
To accommodate diplomatic duties, a diplomatic suite was included as the majority of deck two. This includes a Grand Reception hall, three small offices, a small assembly room for diplomatic functions and two smaller meeting chambers. Unusual for a frigate vessel, a small galley/kitchen was also installed to allow it to handle diplomatic functions. This gives the Majestic exceptional diplomatic capabilities for a vessel of its size. A single shuttlebay was designed to hold standard shuttles, while the main long-range support craft of the ship was intended to be its Aerowing runabout.
With the end of the Dominion War, the Majestic class was reconsidered for refit and restoration to the original intended size of 357 meters by 171 meters by 60 meters and fifteen decks. Under Rear Admiral David Andrews of the ASDB, the Majestic class ships were individually recalled and refit to initial intended specifications. Completion of the project is intended for the end of the year 2387. The USS Majestic, USS de Ruyter, USS Freedom and USS Serenity have already undergone refit with additional refits to be completed as ships are pulled from duty.
