Chapter 4 - Episode 1, Scene 4 - Encounter

Nothing shot him… which Breadon supposed was a good thing!

Stepping through the door he sweeped the hallway with his rifle mounted flashlight. It was empty and led towards a larger open space in the center of the building.

Xaiko moved in after the two men at point, Braedon and Tarrim, and then waved for Ms. Pride to keep up. They were all inside, and as the door shut behind them, all light was cut off, leaving them in the pitch black of the halls within for a moment as they each switched on their wrist lights.

Gafer was sure that at least some of the life sign readings were clustered ahead in the large central room. There was of course interference that even proximity wasn’t able to penetrate.

“Hello?” Xaiko tested her voice. It carried quite a ways in the concrete corridor. “Is anyone here?” She gave a long pause between each other statements as they proceeded down the hall, shining lights into every recesses and side corridor. It was essentially an empty Arena entry. “We’re here on behalf of Starfleet. My name is Commander Xaiko, of the USS Wabi Sabi. We’re here to offer assistance…”

There still remained no return response as they came to the entryway of the arena within, which was equally as dark as the hallways, at least at first.

As she took up the rear, Zoe Pride found herself turning to check behind them constantly. Dark, creepy, abandoned places only reminded her of all the holonovels she’d run in the horror genre. She started to turn back to the rest of her team as she caught up to them at the Arena entrance. “All clear in—”

“Don’t speak too soon.” Xaiko warned as they watched multiple glowing forms seem to rise and expand across the distance of the arena before them.

“More terror bubbles. Great.” Pride’s hand was on her phaser.

“Hold—” Xaiko was uncertain, looking to Mr. Tarrim for further analysis.

Gafer scanned the drifting lights, there was no doubt “They are the same creatures as those outside.” They were energy beings so one would have expected them to radiate energy of some kind, but they were not… At least not in an active way, no discharges or radiation beyond life signs. “I am also getting a handful of humanoid life signs in that room also.

That sealed her choice. She had no desire to hurt the life forms, presumably animals although that could be a mistake in classification at this point, but beyond them were the people they had come to assist. “Use stun settings,” she ordered, motioning for how she wanted the team to position themselves. “Clear the way to the settlers.”

Jeram’s first shot went wide and exploded a light fixture in a shower of sparks! Clearly affronted by the near miss the Cnidarian released a withering discharge, much like lightning which struck the young cadet in the shoulder, dropping him to one knee with a grimace of pain!

Striding forward with confidence Gaffer shot at the attacking Cnidarian, the crimson beam of his type 2 phaser hit the jelly squarely, an electric like ripple of golden energy engulfed the creature, but it kept coming.

Xaiko momentarily had covered her head from the falling glass and sparks, only just spying the jellyfish’s strikes out of the corner of her eye. As she raised her own weapon, she was likewise stung by an energy discharge, but got a shot off before she fell back grimmacing from the pain and seeing spots in her vision. She wasn’t sure but trying to tell apart the lights in her vision from the ones in the arena, she thought she saw one fewer of them floating towards them. They had stunned one so far, at least. And if her eyes weren’t lying, several of the lights had stopped advancing and were fleeing the exits. Only one remained committed to approaching the team. “Keep firing,” she insisted.

From his kneeling position Jeram’s second shot struck the creature, at the same moment he was struck again. This time he was forced backwards. Over balanced he fell onto his back.

Gaffer spared a glance to make sure the cadet was still alive; he would need first aid but he would survive until treatment could be given.

Gafer’s second shot took down the second jelly, the stunning beam overloaded the creatures nervous systems and it dropped like a sack of potatoes! Gafer quickly moved to Jeram’s side and treated the electrical burns, “You’ll need to see the Doc once we get back” he said. “But you are fine for now.”

Still keeping her phaser in hand and scanning each side of the room for fear any of their other jellyfish friends decided to return, Xaiko cautiously moved towards the center of the arena where the two floating jellyfish that had advanced on them had fallen. They seemed to still have a faint bioluminescence to them. “Check their life signs.” She said, motioning to the jellies. She didn’t need to get close enough to be lashed with a ribbon like tentacle. But she was hoping they weren’t dying either.

“Yes ma’am” Gafer said stepping towards the Jelly and scans them. Even at a low stun setting the Cnidarian had been damaged, injured he should say. He reported this.

“Does it look like they can be revived?”

Running a deeper scan he ran them through the runabouts database, as well as his own experiences. “No,” he said. “They are energy based life forms. I have zero frame of reference on how to deal with these creatures from a medical standpoint. “Chances are they will heal on their own, I would say they have something equivalent to a broken leg,” he added with a shrug.

“I’m not signing that thing’s cast,” Pride muttered as she shuffled past, giving a wide berth.
