Task Force 72

Task Force 72 is an operational group within the greater 9th Fleet “Obsidian Fleet”. Tasked with border patrol, humanitarian support, and anti-piracy, the Task Force is operationally based out of Esquimalt Station to the North-Western quadrant of the Federation.

Following the chaos of the 2380’s, with the fall of the Romulan Star Empire, and the Martian Attack, the Federation tasked Starfleet with the daunting prospect of restructuring the Fleet to better accommodate the new reality it found itself in. The 9th Fleet, which had always had a tenuous relationship with the Romulan people, found itself undergoing the largest focused reconstruction. With the destabilized nation next door, an effort to secure the borders was established.

As the Ferengi Alliance became full fledged members of the Federation, and the Cardassian Union has moved to being allied with the Federation, it became easy to reassign the Task Force formerly assigned to patrol those areas. Thus, Task Force 72 was relocated to Esquimalt Station to support in the new operations towards the Federation North. When Esquimalt switched places with Deep Space 3 in 2398, this change was made official, and the new operational borders were laid out.

Border Patrols, Anti-Piracy, and Humanitarian support became the primary undertakings of the Task Force. Based out of Esquimalt Station, operations are now intended to fulfill the order of keeping the peace within and without the Federation. Liaison efforts have been established with the Fenris Rangers, in an effort to bring the rogue element into line, in a similar vein to the former Maquis. Further, the forces of Task Force 72 have been given a reach across the Northern Peninsula of the Federation, stretching back to the operations heart of Obsidian Fleet, Obsidian Command in the Loki system. Bolstered further by Task Force 13’s Colonial Support and Training division, TF72 has become a well regarded division of the 9th, and Starfleet overall.

Primarily Task Force 72 deals with the following species: Breen, Tzenkethi, Qoird, Romulan and Tholian.
