1779022590301Hailing from one of the most well-known and recognizable ship classes in the Alpha and Beta quadrants, the USS Britannia has been serving Starfleet for a century. Launched in 2294, the Britannia was present for a number of high profile events such as the signing of the Treaty of Algeron, the Cardassian Border Wars, and the Dominion War.

After the Dominion War ended, the Britannia was placed in reserve status and scheduled to be decommissioned. However, due to the Synth attack on Mars Colony / Utopia Planitia Shipyards in 2385, Starfleet (which had lost 2/3rds of her standing fleet, as well as the primary shipbuilding facility to replace them) pulled nearly all of her reserve ships out of mothballs and refit them as a stopgap defensive measure until they could rebuild.

More recently, with Starfleet having rebuilt enough defense and exploration vessels, classes like the Excelsior are once again being retired from active service. However, for mission profiles that don’t require the most advanced ship in the fleet (such as routine diplomatic engagements, courier work, Colony support, etc), the “old guard” ships are still being utilized, freeing up the newer designs for more high-profile assignments.

The USS Britannia was chosen for this assignment in particular because of her history with the former Romulan Star Empire, as well as the Excelsior class’ age allowing the Britannia to be perceived as a grand old statesman rather than a cutting-edge warship wearing a diplomatic facade. With the burgeoning Romulan Free State still finding her footing, and a few centuries of mutual mistrust between her people and the Federation, Starfleet is well aware that appearances are everything.
