Introducing Fleet Projects

The Fleet Council has recently passed a new proposal. This proposal enables the Joint Fleet Command to form and disband what we’re calling “Projects”. These Projects will allow us to set up a working group with a specific brief to look at a particular aspect of the fleet. As Admiral Sharr announced on Obsidian Day, the first of these Projects – codenamed Ma’at – will be looking at the Fleet Rules to simplify and streamline the current rulebase to reflect our position as the premier Star Trek simming community. The rules project is now underway and we’ll be updating you all on the progress as it continues.

We’ve also got three other projects we’d like to launch and receive applications for, starting today.

Project Sheshat – The Fleet Lore Project

Fleet Lore’s something we’ve neglected for some time in the Fleet, yet it’s something members of the Fleet have asked about quite a lot. We’ve got quite a bit of source material available from the Founding of the Fleet which, when combined with events over the 16 years of OF and the canon events of the Trek universe such as the destruction of Hobus, will allow the team involved in this project to develop a timeline to 2394 – the current year of the Fleet. Once this baseline has been established we’ll be able to work with interested sims and Obsidian Command to develop regular lore and content updates. By presenting a revised, fleet-wide lore we’ll be able to provide CO’s with readily-accessible material to base missions from and allow sims to contribute towards the rich universe we’ve created.

Project Thoth – The Fleet Academy Rewrite

Our Academy materials were originally written 16 years ago. The world’s changed quite a lot in that time, social media’s become the new face of interaction, things like banner exchanges and toplists aren’t really used anymore and if you can work a Nova you can build a sim site. We’re still heavily reliant on email to run Academy which is cumbersome and leads to delays. This team will be looking at both CO and Cadet Academy and working with members of the Fleet Council to modernise them and get them ready for delivery via IFS2’s Online Learning component. This will allow some element of self-enrolment and self-study on both courses, making it easier for CO’s and players alike to engage and develop into better simmers.

Project Ptah – The Fleet Technology Review

Many of the ship specifications used in Obsidian Fleet have been developed in isolation from one another, leading to a mismatch within the Fleet Specifications. Other designs are no longer used. This presents a considerable body of work to the I&D department to both bring these specs up-to-date and apply a measure of consistency across specs. This group will work as a part of I&D to rebalance specs where necessary, retire designs as needed and apply a consistent approach to the development of new specifications.

As you can see, there’s plenty of opportunity to be involved and shape the future of the fleet. Three projects, each with a similar purpose – review, revise, make the fleet better.
