Hi everyone
Can you believe it’s nearly Christmas!? Before we get there though, I would be remiss if I didn’t wish all of our friends in the US a wonderful Thanksgiving. We here in Obsidian Fleet are genuinely thankful for all of our writing buddies, so why don’t you take a moment this weekend to say thanks to your crewmates for their collaboration over the last year.
This month we also celebrated “I Love To Write” day – another celebration that this community can get behind! A great many personal favourite posts were shared in the #positive-zone channel on our discord server, too many for me to list out individually. Do check them out for yourself!
And now for a bumper round-up of news and updates this month…

Game Director Awards
Minawara has determined to issue the following awards to the faithful crew of the USS Hiroshima:
Bronze Star – Adrianna Darney (Dee)
Dee has been a steady contributor to the Hiroshima for nearly ten years! As such, Doctor Darney has become a fixture of the ship’s sickbay, always ready to support the crew’s crazy antics or deal with our latest infectious exposures, or to play a part in the healing and recovery of our characters in some of their worst times. The character is a wonderful blend between practicality, personability, and professionalism, and Dee doesn’t shy away from letting the story take a toll on her character, physically, emotionally or otherwise.
Silver Star – Jenny Hanmore (Brian)
Brian ought to have a half dozen or more of these by now! He’s a powerhouse simmer for the Hiroshima, with detailed scene setting, engaging characters full of personality, and a narrative voice that makes reading along seamless in any post. If there’s anywhere at all he can contribute, he does, lending both content and flourish to the stories at hand!
Gold Star – Evan Yearling (Colm)
While he’s currently on LOA, it only proves all the more he deserves this award, as we try and manage without his excellent posts to read and take our example from! Writing with Colm is one of the lead attractions to being on the Hiroshima. Ever since I began sim writing, the level of writing Colm produced with his technically minded details and his expansive supporting cast of npcs in his department in engineering was always inspiring. I feel like we’ve grown up together as writers, and count him among the peers that have been most supportive.
Yearling is a legacy character, with a legacy breadth of story, layered with plot that threads deep into his past and tracks across known, and unknown, corners of the galaxy. I’m looking forward to Colm’s return and to seeing what he does with the chess pieces he has left on the board. If he’s anything like me I’m sure he has some ideas, but mostly expects to be as surprised as the rest of us as he discovers the story through his own posts.
With over twenty years of writing as Evan Yearling on the USS Hiroshima, Colm more than deserves the OF Gold Star. He’s earned it.
Game Spotlight: USS Mercutio
The USS Mercutio, whose history goes back over twenty years of simming, is a live action Discord game (Tuesdays 9pm eastern). While small, the crew is like family, both in character and out of character. In addition to the live action role play, we back up our stories with personal logs and joint logs.
Recently, we have added a new feature for our players to stretch their creative legs (or fingers) we’re calling the Multi-Merc-Verse. Players can imagine their characters in new ways where anything is possible. This has already led to two large (50+ page) stories which are in the process of being rolled out.
In terms of our current mission, we’ve just begun a new plot where we found a rogue planet with some domed settlements and we’re about to try our hand at a first contact.
Fleetcast
November was a pause month for Fleetcast, however keep your eyes peeled on our Youtube channel where Ehestri and Kris are plotting a few short videos celebrating some of our community’s favourite posts, just in time for Christmas!
